Walbrook House
at night
The Ward of Walbrook lies at the heart of the City encompassing
the Mansion House, St Stephen’s Church, some of the banking
community including The Bank of England, also The Grocer’s
Hall, plus Restaurants, and a few Shops. The Old
Stock Exchange Building at 125 Old Broad Street, is now occupied
once more, having been refurbished, and houses a
variety of tenants.
It is one of the smallest Wards but is in an important
position, there is heavy traffic converging at Bank
Station, and often becomes one of the hotspots for traffic
delays.
Points of Interest
Walbrook House
There is a new building called Walbrook House in Walbrook
itself, now awaiting tenants. Rothschilds are also in the
process of building their new Offices in St Swithin’s Lane having
been in the Ward for 200 years.
The Church of St Stephen Walbrook
Amidst the rubble and construction of the Ward of Walbrook the
Church of St Stephen remains as a symbol of faith and
continuity.
Situated near Mansion House, it is a haven of peace whilst all
around is either a building site, or road works, or Thames
Water pipes being renewed. The Church remains a place of
serenity.
This is a Wren Church founded on the Banks of The Walbrook
River. Dedicated to St Stephen the martyr it was replaced by
a gothic church on the present site in 1439. Lost once
more in 1666, Wren rebuilt it 1672-79. The original 17th
Century building has survived despite damage in the Second World
War. Under the Dome, the central altar was sculptured by
Henry Moore.
