John Garbutt
In September, the Ward elected John Garbutt as their new
Alderman. We welcome him and hope he enjoys his City
experience. We also thank the former Alderman David
Mauleverer for his contribution to the Ward since 2005, and wish
him well for the future.
John Garbutt’s entire career has been in banking and financial
services. At HSBC, working in the asset management division,
where he has been for the past 18 years, he is Global Head of
Corporate Governance. Previously, he was a Director of
Kleinwort Benson Investment Management and before that worked for a
number of other leading City Companies.
John’s ‘Mother’ Livery Company is the Weavers’, and he is also a
Freeman of the International Bankers’ Livery Company, as well as
being a Member of the Guild of Freeman, the City Livery Club, the
Royal Society of St George (City Branch), and three Ward Clubs,
namely Cheap, Coleman Street, and Walbrook. His charity work
includes being an Almoner of Christ’s Hospital School, Deputy
Chairman of International Students Trust, being actively involved
in supporting Fine Cell Work, The Westminster Society for the
Disabled, and a member of several international charitable
Orders. He sits as a Magistrate on the City Bench and is a
Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
John lives and works in London SW1 and has one son, Simon, who
is at University.
